Nine Things to Prepare Before You Apply for an Offshore Account

Most refused bank applications are refused for unglamorous reasons: incomplete documents, inconsistent information or a business description that the compliance team could not make sense of. The best way to open an account quickly is to arrive prepared.

Prepare certified colour copies of your passport, a proof of address no older than three months, incorporation documents for the entity, and a clear diagram of ownership. Then invest in the parts applicants most often miss: a written business description covering your activities, clients and expected volumes; source-of-funds and source-of-wealth statements; and contactable counterparties who can confirm your business exists.

Be consistent. The name of your company, the directors you declare and the activity you describe must match, character-for-character, between your application and your corporate documents. Inconsistencies are the single most common reason banks request another round of due diligence.
